MIT scientists have developed a laser camera that captures images of people hiding around corners.
The new prototype camera utilizes a high-intensity short burst of laser light to light a scene, while gathering small amounts of light bouncing around the scene.
The prototype device touts a high-intensity light source, called the femtosecond laser that fires short bursts of laser light lasting for one quadrillionth of a second. Generally, chemists use the light sources for imaging reactions at the molecular or atomic scale.
The images obtained during the research are simple. However, the research team anticipates an immense potential for the camera in the fire and rescue areas as well as in the surgical field and military. The laser camera can be utilized as a sophisticated endoscope in these areas.
