Alcatel-Lucent Builds Fiber-Optic Network to Link Seychelles and Tanzania

Alcatel-Lucent has inked an agreement with Seychelles Cable System (SCS) to develop the Seychelles East Africa System (SEAS) connecting Seychelles to Tanzania. The SEAS will offer Seychelles high-speed access to the global fiber-optic network and will span more than 1,900 km and offer connectivity that supports new broadband applications for e-health, government services and commerce sector.

The SEAS will be based on Alcatel-Lucent’s submarine cable series, which includes end-to-end network management in landing stations, synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) devices in the landing stations, and the 1620 Light Manager submarine line terminal. The company will handle the SEAS project on a turnkey basis that includes system designing, manufacturing, deployment, and commissioning.

Principal Secretary for Information, Communication & Technology in Seychelles, Benjamin Choppy stated that the new network connection will provide enhanced access to telecommunications and faster internet services. He added that the cost-effective network solution would enable the company to offer a substitute to satellite connections.
