Zhone Launches 9108 MDU ONT for FTTx Applications

Zhone Technologies announced that it has launched the new Zhone network interface device (zNID) 9108 Multiple Dwelling Unit Optical Network Terminal (MDU ONT) for FTTx applications The 9108 ONT comes in both Gigabit Passive Optical Networking (GPON) and Gigabit Active Ethernet (ActiveE) variants and offers high-quality support for adverse FTTx applications.

The zNID 9108 ONT’s weather proof enclosure can be deployed in two phases for carriers willing to cease the fiber before deploying the active units. The zNID 9108 MDU ONTs are also environmentally hardened.

Both the 9108 variants are developed using the wire-speed router architecture, which is utilized in Zhone’s 42xx zNID product series. The models provide high-quality performance irrespective of the packet size. The ActiveE versison is added into the zNID Active Ethernet Outdoor ONT series, while the GPON version is included in the zNID GPON Outdoor ONTs.

Both the models are interoperable with a wide range of softswitches. They also offer support for Time Division Multiplexer (TDM) architectures, when it is combined with Zhone’s Packet Voice Gateway. This offers service providers a convenient migration route from legacy architecture to softswitch architecture without having to replace ONTs. The models offer eight 10/100/1000bT local area network (LAN) ports and eight voice ports, in addition to a ninth 10/100/1000bT LAN port.
