Semi Materials to Enter LED Lighting Industry

The South Korea-based photovoltaic energy company Semi Materials has awarded a new order to AIXTRON for the delivery of MOCVD reactors. This order is a part of the efforts taken by Semi Materials to enter the LED lighting industry.

The order from Semi Materials includes five AIX 2800G4 HT deposition systems in a wafer configuration of 11” x 4”. The systems will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2010. The systems will be utilized to manufacture GaN UHB LEDs for application in general lighting. The local support team of AIXTRON will commission the reactors in a facility at the production plant of Semi Materials in Gyeongsan.

Semi Materials’ Chief Executive Officer, Kun Park stated that the company has started a new venture to develop and produce high-brightness LEDs for lighting applications. Park added that the reactors will be the centrepiece of the operation, for which the company entered in an agreement with the Kyungbuk province, Korea. The collaboration with AIXTRON will allow Semi Materials to smoothly enter the LED lighting industry, Park noted.
