Telecom Italia has started executing its fiber-optic network in the city of Catania. The company, by 2011 end, will link 34,000 properties to its fiber-optic network in the Ognina and Borgo districts of Catania. The number of properties connected to the network will increase to over 46,000 by 2012 end.
According to the development plan, major municipality regions will feature fiber-optic links by 2013 end. At this time, 63,000 properties that correspond to nearly 150,000 people will be linked to the fiber-optic network.
The 100 Mbps broadband services will be marketed over the new fiber-optic network when the trials are completed. Telecom Italia is aiming to make fiber-optic connections in six Italian cities by 2010 and in 13 cities by 2012. The company plans to reach 138 cities and 50% of the population by 2018.
Telecom Italia, after Catania, will extend the fiber-optic project to Rome, Venice, Turin, and Bari.
