City of Covington Cancels Three-Year Charter Fiber-Optic Contract

The completion of the installation of fiber-optic lines will allow the city of Covington to save about $70,000 per year. The city announced that it will not renew its contract with Charter Communications. The three-year contract for optical fiber lines connects City Hall and serves various buildings in the city.

The city of Covington will retain the optical fiber connections of Charter to the 911 Center and the Covington Police Department. However, the remaining buildings will utilize the connections of the city.

The city of Covington’s Information System Manager, Bobby Johnson stated that the cost of the fiber-optic service with high-speed internet would be retained as such. The city has built its own private optical fiber lines and these fiber connections reach various facilities, he said.

Johnson further informed that the city plans to implement other cost-saving steps by introducing in-house software maintenance activities and a new telephone system. He added that if the council approves these steps, the city can save approximately $150,000 annually in the next five years.
