BT to Provide Fiber-Optic Broadband Services to Barnsley, England

Businesses and residents in Barnsley, England are set to gain from the fiber-optic broadband services as a result of an agreement between the Digital Region project and the Barnsley council. Authorities from the Barnsley town have inked a five-year deal with BT, who aims to offer high-speed broadband services to 97% of South Yorkshire properties.

The Digital Region project, under the £1 million deal, will offer high-speed broadband services to schools and council buildings across the Barnsley town by 2012.

Digital Region’s Chief Executive, David Carr stated that the communications of Barnsley town would be future-proofed because it would be linked to its network. Carr added that Barnsley has the infrastructure to assist a digital economy that generates employment and allows businesses and residents to gain from sophisticated services.

BT is also seeking to enhance the fiber-optic broadband service in the UK. It plans to make the broadband service available to two-thirds of the UK properties by 2015.
