Pioneer is currently developing a laser head-up display for cars. The display connects with the navigation feature present on modern smartphones. The company will exhibit a prototype of the display at the Ceatec electronics show of Japan.
The prototype utilizes a laser to display full-color, high-contrast, bright images on a screen. The screen would be positioned over the dashboard in between the windscreen and the driver. The projected images would appear in the windscreen’s lower part to the driver. The prototype uses a screen that is almost twice the size of a rear-view mirror of a car.
The prototype model was connected to an Android-based phone, and a navigation map was shown on the left-hand side. In addition, an animated Android robot that was present on the right-hand side sent data to drivers.
The smart phone offers network connection and visual output, while the network connection provides the system with various information including road conditions. The connected navigation systems have the capability to download up-to-date road conditions. A number of systems utilize the link to update databases of gas stations and convenience stores. In addition, some of the systems offer continuous updates to gas prices.
