Synopsys Acquires Optical Research Associates

Synopsys, supplier of IP and Electronic Design Automation solutions, announced that it has acquired Optical Research Associates (ORA), an optical design engineering and software firm. Synopsys stated that the acquisition will enable the company to move into the optical design software market.

The ORA software is used in designing and optimizing applications, which require light to be manipulated or controlled. Synopsys mentioned that the technology from ORA will enable it to move into the solid state lighting and display markets that utilize light emitting diodes. The acquisition will also allow Synopsys to expand into the camera and semiconductor lithography device market.

The Senior Vice-President of Synopsys' Silicon Engineering Group, Howard Ko stated that both optimization and analysis of the optical systems involves the same degree of software engineering and algorithmic experience that are presently provided by the company.
