Provider of high bandwidth connectivity solutions, AboveNet will link the research locations and data centers of the Virginia Tech University, including the research institute located in Arlington. The connected facilities of Virginia Tech will help in exchanging vital data among the corporate partners and research facilities.
Virginia Tech chose AboveNet because of its understanding of the business and research requirements of the university, and its experience in offering solutions for moving large amounts of data over a high-bandwidth, secure network.
AboveNet has developed a fiber-optic infrastructure ring for Virginia Tech, to help in meeting the increasing needs for computational research. One node present on the ring is the National Capital Region Aggregation Facility of Virginia Tech. The aggregation facility serves as a nexus for the international and national research networks, including Mid-Atlantic Crossroads, Internet2, and National LambdaRail.
The new research institute offers a platform for the computational and engineering science researchers of the university, to interact with other researchers around the National Capital Region. The solution will offer fiber-optic connections between the main campus locations and data centers in Northern Virginia, and the Arlington research facility. The 90-mile fiber-optic ring, once connected, can be utilized to meet the university requirements. It also serves as a gateway to various institutes and research networks present in the Northern Virginia region.
