Merit Networks Installs Fiber-Optic Network in Michigan

Merit Networks, a provider of fiber-optic services, is planning to install over 1,000 miles of open-access fiber-optic network across the state of Michigan. The company has obtained federal stimulus grant for the deployment, which includes installing fiber-optic lines between Kalkaska, Traverse City, Beulah, Manistee, and Ludington.

Merit’s Relations Manager of the northern Michigan community, Eric Grandstaff stated that the construction of the fiber-optic line would begin in October 2010, and the first phase of the project would be completed by 2012 end. The project’s second phase would connect communities such as Grayling, Houghton Lake, Lake City, and Cadillac.

The fiber-optic line construction will generate broadband infrastructure that will enable Internet service providers to link and provide services to people having dial-up or satellite access.

Penny Hill, Village Manager of Kalkaska stated that the fiber-optic installation would benefit the whole region surrounding the community. Hill added that the current businesses of the region would have more online opportunities on a dependable network.
