Oclaro’s New Design Center Offers Diode Laser Packaging Designs

Provider of optical communication solutions, Oclaro has opened a new Design Center in Arizona, near Tucson. The new Design Center will offer customers with diode laser packaging designs by utilizing the substantial local experience in the Tucson area. The company will also utilize the workforce, which joined Oclaro after acquiring Newport Spectra Physics.

The Tucson Design Center will employ nearly 30 people initially. The Design Center is part of the Advanced Photonics Solutions Division (APS) of Oclaro. The APS division serves the increasing and diverse laser diode fields, such as lasers for printing, consumer electronics, materials processing, and medical procedures.

Oclaro’s laser products have diverse wavelengths from 700 to 1500 nm. It provides a comprehensive collection of product platforms, such as stack arrays, fiber-coupled packages, and open heat sink single emitters. It has a wide range of power management options across the platforms ranging from 100’s of mWs to kWs.

Oclaro obtained the laser diode business of Newport Spectra Physics in July 2009 via an asset exchange. The acquisition has enabled Oclaro to provide a diverse series of laser diodes, and attain lower costs and high-operational efficiencies. The acquisition has also enabled the company to increase its customer base.
