Broadband network and switching infrastructure company, Great Lakes Comnet (GLC), has planned to expand its fiber-optic network to provide faster data speeds, next-generation technology and improved reliability to customers.
A $69.6 million federal stimulus grant will be used to build the fiber-optic network that will extend to 1,270 miles. The network infrastructure will bring high-speed broadband access to underserved regions in Michigan.
GLC has laid more than 1,800 miles of fiber-optic cables across the Midwest and Michigan, Besides this, 2,000 miles of fiber cable are still under construction. The network expansion will provide high-speed internet access to over 525,000 households, 569 community institutions and 49,000 businesses. Next-generation data service, SS7, video and voice technologies will be provided to GLC’s telecommunications carriers and consumers.
GLC’s CEO, Paul Bowman stated that the fiber expansion will consolidate their position in the market and will help them to reduce costs. He added that the company is making a significant progress in its telecommunications and broadband connection services.
