UK-based company, i3 America, is set to install a fiber optic network across Quincy city. As part of a pilot program, the fiber-optic cable measuring 1,300 feet will be installed in the municipal sewer lines. Quincy’s Department of Central Services has approved the pilot program. The project is estimated to cost around $50,000.
i3 America’s VP of sales, Brian Foley stated that the fiber optic cables will be installed on the bottom part of the sewers and mats will be used to hold down the cables. This technique has already been used in the United Kingdom. Foley added that after laying the cables, the company would wait for a month to ensure that the fibers do not damage the sewers in any way.
Foley further added that the fiber optic networks would provide up to 100 Mb/s and can be boosted to up to 1 Gb/s. The project generated nearly 200 construction jobs, and the fiber-optic network will be delivered to buildings and homes at no cost. Service providers will also be able to provide internet services via the network.
