SLT Commissions Fibre Optic Cable to Link Former War Zone

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) has announced that it has commissioned an optical fibre cable to connect the northern Jaffna peninsula’s former war zone with the remaining regions of the country to provide high-speed communication infrastructure. The information superhighway in the northern Jaffna has been constructed along the A9 main route, where IT and BPO businesses are being promoted to create jobs post the war.

According to Sri Lanka Telecomm, the optical information system will enhance clients’ access to high-speed broadband and will promote business expansion. In addition, the fibre optic system will allow telecommunications operators to launch new facilities in the northern Jaffna. The new optical fibre cable is optimized to meet the future needs of the Northern peninsula.

The fibre optic project involves new telephone exchanges at Mullaithivu and Mankulam and will improve broadband coverage and basic communication infrastructure. The towns of Nelliady, Chavakachcheri, Kopay, Chunnakam, Sitthankerny, Manipay and Jaffna have been linked to the Sri Lanka Telecom broadband network via the optical fibre. The copper access network was extended from these towns to the consumer areas in the region.
