Government of Uganda to Connect Fiber-Optic Cable to SEACOM

The ministry of ICT in Uganda has announced that the national e-governance infrastructure cable and data transmission backbone cable will be connected to the East African sub-marine cable system (EAASy), the East African Marine System (TEAMS), and the SEACOM cables.

The SEACOM cable was the first among the three cables to enter the service in July 2009, and then the TEAMS cable entered the service in September 2009. The EASSy cable is ready to enter the service, as deployment of the sub-marine was completed in April 2010.

The ICT minister, Aggrey Awori stated that the fiber-optic cable connection would ease the project works such as the business process outsourcing. The government of Uganda intends to surpass the cables installed by the local telecom and mobile service providers, he said.

Awori noted that every district in Uganda will be connected to a national data transmission backbone for supporting inter-conferencing, and other advanced technologies. He also said that the connectivity between Katuna and Kampala along the border of Uganda-Rwanda would be fast tracked.
