Fiber-optic broadband service provider, Jackson Energy Authority (JEA) has chosen the Homerun Network of Tantalus, for fiber-based smart grid.
The high bandwidth offered by the optical fiber allows JEA to deploy various demand response applications including Tantalus load control and smart thermostats, for C&I and residential consumers.
The fiber network also enables JEA to implement smart metering to more than 100,000 gas, water, and electric endpoints. JEA’s deployment of the Homerun Network represents the fifth utility to deploy the network. Tantalus’ Homerun Network utilizes a utility-owned FTTH (Fiber to the Home) network for Smart Grid and triple-play media functionality.
In addition to the Homerun Network deployment, the JEA project will also deploy the electric meters featuring remote disconnect beneath the glass switches. The electric meters allow the company to handle the move-outs or move-ins, and non-payments from its operations facility through the Tantalus Utility Network, TUNet.
JEA’s Chief Executive Officer, Danny Wheeler stated that they selected Tantalus’ TUNet after conducting extensive analysis of various Advanced Metering Infrastructure technologies. He added that Tantalus supports the TVA-approved energy efficiency applications.
