NanoGaN Receives Patents for LED and Laser Nanocolumn Technology

IQE announced that its subsidiary, NanoGaN, has received two patents for its nanocolumn technology meant for the manufacturing of LEDs, and green and blue lasers. The first patent, ‘Growth method using nanostructure compliant layers and HVPE for producing high quality compound semiconductor materials,’ has been awarded by the Japan Patent Office.

The first patent covers the company’s nanocolumn technology for manufacturing free-standing GaN (gallium nitride) substrates. The GaN substrates are important for the production of ultra HB LEDs for SSL (solid-state lighting), and green and blue semiconductor lasers.

The UK patent office granted the second patent titled ‘Production of semiconductor devices’, which covers the production of semiconductor devices such as solar cells, LEDs, and laser diodes onto the nanocolumn platform. The manufacturing of ultra HB LEDs and semiconductor lasers necessitate stable substrates that have reduced crystalline defects to minimize production cost and maximize the yield. The company foresees that the core technology of NanoGaN may be used for improving IQE’s position in GaN solutions supply market for RF-based applications.
