Communication solutions provider, MTS Allstream, has planned to invest $125 million to deploy FiON, fibre-to-the home network, to Manitoba communities in the next five years. MTS will install the network in approximately 120,000 Manitoba households by 2015. The network will bring advanced technologies to majority of Manitoba homes.
The FiON network will allow MTS to offer internet services with 25 Mbps speed and MTS Ultimate TV service to the communities. The FiON also has the potential to bring over 100 Mbps broadband speeds in the future.
MTS was the first company to install the FiON network in the Winnipeg’s Waverley West area in January 2010. Earlier in April 2020, the company had announced that it will extend the plan to cover the City of Selkirk and the adjoining regions of St. Clements and St. Andrews. The FiON network will be completely installed in the City of Selkirk by 2011.
MTS’ President, Kelvin Shepherd, stated that the expanded fiber installation along with the existing VDSL networks in Portage, Brandon, and Winnipeg is anticipated to offer unique TV and broadband features to Manitoba homes.
