LZH Develops New Laser-Stabilized Welding Process

Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) announced that it has developed a new welding process based on GMAW (gas metal-arc welding). The welding speed can be increased significantly by adding a laser beam to stabilize and guide the welding process.

Adding the laser beam to the welding process also improves the quality of the welding seam. The novel welding process is ideal for high strength steels, traditional steels and aluminum materials.

Laser stabilization in gas metal-arc welding

The FÜLAS project, supported by the PTKA (Project Management Agency Karlsruhe) and funded by the BMBF (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research), laid the foundation for the GMAW process.

A laser with low output power was utilized for the GMA-welding process, and the low investment expenditures for this process makes it suitable for small and medium-sized welding organizations.

LZH’s industrial partners previously confirmed the economical use of the welding process. The company conducts feasibility tests for a range of materials and also provides process integration support.
