DuPont and Hongkong Electric Collaborate for Major Photovoltaic Rooftop Project

DuPont and Hongkong Electric have collaborated to build and operate a large thin-film photovoltaic (PV) rooftop in Hong Kong. The rooftop installation includes 5,500 PV modules, which can produce 620,000 kWh every year. The energy generated will help in reducing 1.4 tons of nitrogen dioxide, 2.9 tons of sulfur dioxide and 520 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

PV rooftop installation

DuPont Apollo, a subsidiary of DuPont, assisted Hongkong Electric in developing and managing the balance-of-system, in addition to providing PV modules. The balance-of-system includes all the parts of a PV system and aids in optimizing the cost/performance ratio.

The thin-film PV modules are ideal for solar farm and large-scale rooftop applications. Under diffuse light settings, the modules can produce more wattage output and use 1/200 the silicon compared to the conventional silicon solar cells. This helps in reducing energy payback times. DuPont Apollo has also collaborated with Everbright Environmental Protection Engineering for a major rooftop installation project in Shenzhen, China.

According to DuPont Apollo, both the company and Hongkong Electric strive for sustainable development through renewable energy, and the collaboration will speed up photovoltaic applications in Hong Kong.
