Pacific Fiber and Pacnet Build Fiber Optic Cable in Australasia

Asian telecommunication provider, Pacnet, has collaborated with Pacific Fibre to install a 13,600 km fiber-optic cable connecting the U.S., New Zealand and Australia.

The fiber-optic cable will be installed in Los Angeles, Auckland and Sydney. The project is anticipated to be completed by 2013.

Pacnet and Pacific Fibre will have joint ownership of the fiber optic cable. Both the companies will look after the operations, maintenance and the projects’ supply contract.

Pacnet’s Chief Executive, Bill Barney, stated that the project will improve international connectivity, which is crucial to support broadband initiatives undertaken by New Zealand and Australia. He added that the project is important to the company’s plan of increasing undersea cable resources in Australasia.
