Japanese Engineers Develop Ultrafast Semi-Conductor Laser

A group of engineers in Japan have developed a blue violet expeditious pulsed semi-conductor laser with a 100W output, which is 100 times more than the present lasers and will be used for powering the optical discs of the future.

The team comprised of engineers from Advanced Materials Laboratories, Tohoku University and Sony Corporation in addition to Professor Hiroyuki Yokoyama from of the New Industry Creation Hatchery Center.

The team announced that the laser technology will appear in various devices because of its compact light source box and will also be used for developing optical discs that can hold 20 times more data like, more movies to be stored in a single disc than the present Blu-ray discs.

Tohoku University mentioned that the laser has the potential to produce optical pulses within duration of 3 ps with a repetition frequency of 1 GHz and a 100W output peak power.
