Cambodia has officially commenced the optical fiber cable network operation with Laos on July 5. The network operation will help in advancing the economy in the Greater Mekong Sub (GMS) region. The network connects Cambodia to the existing fiber optic networks in Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, and China. GMS constitutes of six countries: Thailand, Vietnam, China, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar. China had initiated the GMS-Information Superhighway project and the GMS member countries signed an MOU to develop a fiber-optic backbone network. The MOU was also signed with intention to expand the telecommunication network from metros to rural areas.

So Khun, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Cambodia, said that the construction of the fiber optic network began in December 2007, and was completed in July 2009. The Cambodian government received a loan of US$17.5 million from the EXIM Bank of China for the project.
