EMCORE has introduced a new line of EMP Fiber-optic Gyroscope (FOG) modules. The new FOG, named as EMP-1, is a single-axis module that features the company manufactured hybrid-integrated photonic transceiver and lithium-niobate modulator components.
The FOG module is equipped with the latest closed-loop processing circuitry that is DSP-based. It has analog as well as digital outputs, while has a single power supply of +5 V. The gyroscope module has been designed for use in various military and commercial applications such as navigation, oil & gas exploration, platform/camera stabilization, and robotics.
The Director of FOG technology at EMCORE, Dr. K.K. Wong stated that they have years of experience in supplying optical transceiver components and lithium-niobate modulators for FOGs. The new launch enables them to leverage their capabilities in vertical-integration of significant photonic devices to develop a high-performance, economic, and compact FOG module. He added that the EMP-1 technology has the ability to offer high quality closed-loop FOGs at a same cost as that of the lower-performance open-loop FOGs.
The company will showcase the new FOG and its component technology at the Florida Joint Navigation Conference from June 8 to 10, 2010.
