Cree announced that the University of Central Florida (UCF) has joined its LED University program by installing LED light fixtures in the student union. The program is a community of universities from across the world working to boost up the adoption of LED lighting in their campuses.
Cree LR6 LED Downlight
By installing Cree LR24 LED troffers and LR6 LED downlights in the Key West Ballroom, UCF expects to save a minimum of $10,000 per year in maintenance and energy expenditure. These LED fixtures will consume about 85% less electricity, minimizing the energy consumption to below 1,500 W from over 10,000 W. Further, UCF has replaced the conventional T8 fluorescent lights with 17 LED fixtures in the student government offices.
The Associate Director of the Student Union at UCF Rick Falco said that considering the fact that lights in the Key West ballroom are on for 16-18 hours daily; the initial investment can be regained within two years. Moreover, the LED lights offer better light quality and dimmable option, while being easier on the eyes. This offers flexibility to hold different kind of events in the ballroom, he noted.
The LED programs manager of Cree Deb Loving lauded the UCF Student Government Association for choosing the LED lighting, demonstrating the impact students can bring in motivating green initiatives.
