Molex Incorporated announced today its Woodhead® Safety Lamp for high-bay fixtures, the electrical industry’s first safety lamp to meet the requirements for an open rated fixture (Type-O), the new Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA2007), and the Code of Federal Regulations (21 CFR1040.30) revised in 2008.
The high-intensity discharge (HID) lamp includes a unique self-extinguishing feature (Type T) that will permanently disable the lamp after just a few minutes of operation once the glass envelope is broken. The lamp is ideal for temporary lighting in harsh environments such as construction and maintenance sites that require the high performance of metal halide lamps.
“Open rated lamps in harsh conditions, such as construction sites, have minimal protection, are often exposed to flying construction debris and are frequently transported from one site to another,” said Scott Hagen, global product manager, Molex. “Frequently, when lamps are damaged, it is not catastrophic and workers will continue using them, exposing themselves and others to harmful and sizeable amounts of UV radiation.”
UV radiation can cause a wide range of dangerous effects including skin discoloration, severe burns, temporary eye damage and even loss of sight. The danger is often compounded when workers use the lamps as hand and glove warmers. “The Woodhead Safety Lamp’s self-extinguishing feature will drastically reduce the risk of injury from UV exposure by making it impossible to use a lamp with cracked or broken glass,” added Hagen.
In addition to the self-extinguishing feature, the Woodhead Safety Lamp includes an arc tube shield to protect workers from injury due to falling hot glass. Its EX39 exclusionary socket base connects to NEC 2005 pink lamp sockets and it is code and federal law compliant with NEC, OSHA, EISA and CFR requirements.
Molex will showcase the Woodhead Safety Lamp for high-bay fixtures at LIGHTFAIR, booth 1741, along with several other Woodhead products including:
- Woodhead LED Hand Lamp: A compact, battery-operated hand lamp that employs 30 light emitting diodes (LEDs), which generate 780 initial lumens of light – the equivalent light output of a 13 watt compact fluorescent bulb – and provides 100,000 hours of service life.
- Woodhead Bench Light: A rugged, high-performance fluorescent bench light that provides direct overhead task lighting in harsh industrial work areas. The 120V, 60Hz bench light is energy efficient, as well as space efficient – the entire unit measures 57 inches in length and has a narrow (2 by 3”) width profile.
- Woodhead Hazardous Location Portable Flood Light: A portable work light that features two 300 watt halogen lamps that do not heat the enclosure above 160ºC. It also features a rubber (SOW) cordset and a hazardous location plug to provide optimum flexibility and portability in a multitude of hazardous location applications.
- Woodhead Wide-Area Fluorescent Light for Hazardous Locations: A sturdy, cast-aluminum enclosure and impact-resistant seal keeps out moisture and contaminants while the twin 55 watt fluorescent lamps produce light equivalent to many higher-wattage units.
