10mm Thick LCD TV by Samsung

In what looks set to become the next battleground for one-upmanship between the major LCD TV manufacturers, Samsung has previewed a screen which is just 10mm thick at this week's FPD International show Japan.

The new screen comes hot on the heels of Toshiba's 40XF355D, which at just 23mm wide, is the slimmest LCD TV currently available in the UK.

This 10mm screen comes with an LED backlight to provide what Samsung are claiming is 92% of the NTSC standard for colour saturation, with a power consumption of under 90W.

The thickness achieved for LCD TV's by the likes of Samsung and Toshiba cannot hope to match those achieved by OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) screens, with Sony demonstrating a 3mm thick prototype recently, but products based on this technology are years away from production, and are only available in sizes of around 10 inches across at present.
