GigOptix Inc. (OTCBB:GGOX) announces that $5 million in government funding for the development its On-Chip Integrated Photonic Polymer Transceiver has been requested by U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) in the Fiscal Year 2011 Defense Appropriations bill. This appropriation bill must still receive Defense Appropriations Subcommittee approval.
The funding would help to develop a new family of fully integrated 100G drivers and modulators for use by the U.S. Air Force in its communications systems. With current technologies requiring greater space and demanding higher energy utilization, GigOptix’ polymer products will lead to faster, smaller and more energy efficient communications systems for some of the military’s most mission critical technology systems.
Dr. Raluca Dinu, Vice President and General Manager of GigOptix Bothell said, “We are the technology leader when it comes to high performance electro-optical polymer solutions. This funding will allow us to continue our important research of ultra broadband, radiation hard and low power communications systems to help the Air Force maintain its edge in air superiority. The U.S. Air Force, and the United States Government are looking for a solution to the growing problem of size, weight and power of current technologies and they view GigOptix’ technology as a solution for their satellite and high speed network communication needs.”
“Senator Murray has shown her dedication to both Washington State and its innovative businesses through the submission of this appropriations request,” stated Dr. Avi Katz, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of GigOptix. “I would like to thank her, once again, for her loyal and continuous commitment to GigOptix’ technology vision and mission. The continuous development of strategic integration technologies is the key to the enduring success of our communication systems and especially our military effectiveness.”
