The Argentine unit of Japanese cable supplier Furukawa Industrial plans to start producing fiber optic cabling in January 2008, country manager José Alcántara told BNamericas.
The factory is to be located in Buenos Aires province and is in the final stage of development, he added.
"We expect to focus initially on the local market. However, we could also export to other markets in the future," Alcántara said at the Expocomm trade show in Buenos Aires this week.
The company expects to see 25% revenue growth this year compared to the US$8mn billed in 2006, and to end 2007 with approximately 80 active clients. "Our goal is to sell more to our existing clients rather than expanding our client base," Alcántara added.
In South America, Furukawa also has offices in Brazil and Chile. From Brazil, the company is currently exporting to several Latin American markets as well as to the US, Europe and Asia.
Furukawa expects its Latin American operations to see overall revenue growth of nearly 15% in 2007 compared to the US$130mn in 2006, the company recently told BNamericas.
Furukawa provides telecoms and data communications hardware, mainly fiber optic and metal cabling, and also designs, installs and maintains networks. The company deploys optical system trunking networks, conventional access networks, broadband systems and structured cabling systems.
