Fiber-optic Maker Received Research Grant to Develop Fiber That Can Transmit One terabit of Data per Second

An Upper Macungie Township maker of fiber-optic components is one of 69 companies to receive research grants from the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

CyOptics Inc. and a partner firm from California have received a three-year, $5.9 million grant to develop technology for components used in fiber-optic networks that can transmit and receive up to one terabit of data per second over one single-mode fiber. Data transmission at such fast rates would reduce the complexity and cost of high-capacity fiber-optic networks.

The NIST, which is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, uses the grants to promote innovation and industrial competitiveness.

CyOptics, which employs about 200 people here, is the largest maker of fiber-optic components in the Lehigh Valley. Its partner in the project will be Kotura Inc. of Monterey Park, Calif., which also makes components for fiber-optic networks.
