Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) today announced worldwide a new optical fiber data center solution that addresses the critical issues facing today’s chief information officers (CIOs) and also will meet the demands of tomorrow’s data centers. The data center solution is enabled by Corning’s bend-insensitive ClearCurve® optical fiber technology. This first-to-market data center offering reduces overall installation time, while also enabling increased server density, reduced power consumption, and increased reliability. Corning plans to launch the product solution details at the following European tradeshows:
- 2009 BICSI European Conference & Exhibition, June 22-24 in Dublin
- 2009 DatacenterDynamics Conference & Expo, June 23 in Madrid
- 2009 LANline Tech Forum, “Cabling, Network and Data Centre Infrastructure," June 23 in Zurich
“As information technology executives continue to manage their way through data center projects and upgrades in today’s difficult economic environment, the new Corning solution will enable them to capture the functionality and efficiency benefits of optical fiber over unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) copper wiring,” said Clark Kinlin, president and chief executive officer, Corning Cable Systems. “Fiber optic solutions improve overall airflow, thereby reducing energy costs. Conversely UTP copper wiring creates higher generated heat, thereby increasing cooling requirements.
“Through our new data center solution, we took the opportunity to combine our expertise in cable, hardware and equipment with our innovative ClearCurve bend-insensitive fiber to create an offering that maximizes the benefits of a fiber solution, while also creating new advantages in the areas of reduced installation time, improved data center layout and overall reliability,” said Kinlin.
Corning’s new optical fiber data center solution will also create additional cost savings with respect to equipment space. This future-proof solution for data center operators enables significantly more efficient rack space usage. Additionally, the bend performance of Corning® ClearCurve® fiber and the reduced cable diameter allow trunk cables and jumpers to be quickly routed through tight spaces with no impact on system performance. The preterminated nature of the solution allows for faster modifications and additions, without disrupting existing equipment or network operation.
In January 2009, Corning introduced ClearCurve multimode fiber, which brings a tenfold improvement in bend performance over past multimode fibers used in data centers, local area networks and industrial applications. By leveraging the revolutionary benefits of ClearCurve, the new Corning data center solution will feature 100 percent greater density than existing solutions. It also enables a simplified data center layout that will allow data center operators to easily move, add or update the system configuration approximately 25 percent faster than traditional solutions.
“We believe that our new data center solution will set new standards in performance and reliability. Our solution allows for a reduced data center footprint, simplicity of installation with plug and play assembly components, and promotes improved airflow efficiency with reduced energy consumption and cost. All lead to increased data center efficiency and lower cost,” Kinlin said.
