Xtera Communications, a global supplier of next generation optical solutions, today announced that Marcatel, a full service provider of Video, Voice and Data telecommunications services in the Mexican and US market, has selected and is deploying the Xtera 6400 OTP (Optical Transport Platform) as a cost-effective means of quickly introducing a broad range of media and communications services.
As part of its overall expansion, Marcatel is investing heavily in the transformation of its entire network to meet customer requests for advanced video, voice and data oriented services, becoming one of the leading triple-play companies in the Mexican marketplace. By selecting the Xtera 6400 OTP for its optical backbone, the company is taking advantage of a flexible architecture that scales along with service demand, allows a broad range of services to be offered, and is completely aligned with Marcatel's initiatives to expand its technological leadership in the markets it serves.
Xtera's 6400 OTP minimizes the need to pre-plan for service types and greatly improves the flexibility of service routing. The system uses a flexible ROADM (Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexer) technology that allows Marcatel to quickly re-route services without deploying technicians to multiple sites, thereby expediting delivery of new services, improving customer satisfaction, and reducing operational expenses.
Marcatel selected Xtera's 6400 OTP because it is a proven platform which has been successfully implemented to transform networks in North America and around the world. "We are very pleased to be able to offer value-added services to our customers using this technology," said Andres Cordovez, Marcatel Vice-President of Network and Service delivery. "The 6400 OTP provides the flexibility that we were seeking and includes features such as Ethernet-ready transponders that will help Marcatel grow market share in Next Generation Networks."
The optical network operated by Marcatel is a critical component of the North American telecommunications infrastructure connecting major cities in Mexico to the US Market. "Marcatel is building a state-of-the-art network to provide its customers with the convergent services that they need and demand," said Manuel Andrade, Senior VP Sales Americas & Iberia, Xtera Communications. "We are honored that Marcatel entrusted Xtera with a key role in a mission-critical project that extends Marcatel leadership well into the future."
The 6400 OTP supports both existing services and new Ethernet based services for video, voice and data. It can be deployed to support a variety of architectures and allows network growth to provide additional routes for both service and restoration needs. The rapid network planning and service provisioning capabilities of the 6400 OTP allow service providers to cost-effectively evolve their networks to meet the fast changing service demands of their customer base. The 6400 OTP supports a multitude of services including 2.5Gb/s, 10Gb/s, Ethernet (1GbE, 10GbE), DVB(Digital Video Broadcast) and SAN services.
