Video Correction LSI Significantly Improves Video Quality Under Low Light

Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. today announced it has developed "ML87V21072," a video correction LSI for monitoring cameras with a noise reduction function and a FIFO frame memory. Using OKI's original technology to reduce CCD noise efficiently, the LSI can correct the video to high quality even in low light intensity. Sample shipments of this LSI will start in June and volume shipment from October 2008.

“With recent concerns for personal and property protection, we have been seeing demands for higher quality video in monitoring cameras,” said Hiroshi Enomoto, President of OKI’s Silicon Solutions Company. “Using OKI’s ML87V21072, the image quality can be greatly improved in CCTV cameras to monitor buildings and stores, network cameras to monitor over the Internet, and automobile cameras to monitor vehicle surroundings to avoid car accidents, thus offering a better user experience. OKI plans to add distortion correction functions and include video recognition technology for more value-added video correction LSI products.”

Though CCD image sensors are the most commonly used solution in monitoring cameras, noise caused by low-light intensity degrades the quality. Conventional noise reduction methods cannot improve image clarity enough as the noise reduction feature produces an afterimage as a side effect.

However, with OKI’s ML87V21072, users can experience a high-clarity, high-quality video. This is done by including three functions in the chip: OKI’s well-established original 3D noise reduction function; a function to apply suitable noise reduction to the still picture or video by automatically determining the type of video; and a function to automatically correct low-light intensity and backlighting. The LSI also includes a video encoder function, and is compatible with DSP interface, which makes it possible to directly connect with DSP in CCD image sensor applications.
