Newport Corporation has announced that its Fiber Laser Business Group has shipped the first units of a new laser system based on its innovative fiber technology platform to select international customers.
This new laser system, which operates in the ultraviolet (UV) wavelength range and generates picosecond laser pulses, offers superior performance compared with any existing laser architecture.
The new system's unique combination of picosecond pulse operation, high UV power and excellent beam quality enables it to perform processes such as cutting, dicing, scribing and ablation with higher precision and less damage to the material. As a result, the new laser system improves process results and reduces cost of ownership in a wide variety of new and existing applications in the microelectronics and industrial markets, such as semiconductor, solar cell and flat panel display manufacturing.
Robert G. Deuster, chairman and chief executive officer, stated, “We are very excited to announce this important milestone for our Fiber Laser Business Group. We were the first company to aggressively embrace diode-pumped solid-state technology in the 1980's, and we developed some of the original fiber laser and amplifier technology in the 1990's. Now, we expect to change paradigms in the laser industry once again, by providing solutions that offer unsurpassed performance and reliability thanks to fiber technology.”
Deuster continued, “Newport has a unique position as one of the industry's only vertically integrated laser suppliers, with expertise in diode lasers and high-precision optics and coatings, and industry-leading capabilities in high-efficiency frequency conversion. Combining these strengths with the expertise of our Fiber Laser Business Group, we have developed and delivered a next-generation fiber-based product that provides unmatched performance, reliability and cost of ownership.”
Deuster concluded, “The laser system shipped recently is the first in a series of new fiber-based laser products Newport will introduce this year. We look forward to enhancing and expanding our product portfolio in this area, offering higher-performance alternatives to conventional laser technologies in a wide range of markets and applications.”
