UNESCO Headquarters Hosts International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies 2015

Supported by 100 partners from more than 85 countries, including ECOP, the alliance of European Centers for Outreach in Photonics coordinated by ICFO, the International Year of Light (IYL) 2015 is a global initiative which aims to drive home the importance of light and light-based technologies in all of our lives, as well as in the sustainable development of society as a whole.

The United Nations, in proclaiming an International Year focusing on the topic of light science and its applications, explicitly recognizes the importance of raising global awareness on its ubiquity and potential.

The Opening Ceremony of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 takes place at the UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, on 19-20 January 2015 and you will see the IYL 2015 logo on events organized by ICFO throughout the year. We encourage you to regularly check the ICFO EVENTs calendar as well as the dedicated OUTREACH pages on our web for ways to participate.

This is an exciting year for Photonics - the year when it may become a household word. For all of us who are dedicated to the advancement of the science and technology of light, this is OUR YEAR!
