Avanex Corporation, a pioneering provider of intelligent photonic solutions enabling next-generation optical networks, today supplemented its OASIS EDFA portfolio by unveiling its compact power transient-suppressed EDFA at OFC/NFOEC 2008 Expo.
The PG1600P EDFA integrates proprietary, advanced power control capability with cost-effective EDFA technology to dramatically improve 40Gb/s receiver sensitivity while suppressing optical transients that could catastrophically damage the receiver and cause network outages. The amplifier has a gain of 27dB and output power up to 15dB in a compact package designed for integration into 40Gb/s line cards. Advanced power control suppresses input transients of +/-6dB to less than +/-1dB, extending the automatic gain control capabilities of the existing PureGain 1600 platform upon which it’s built.
Avanex General Manager of Modules and Subsystems Products, Richard Smart, said, “All 40Gb/s transponders must have EDFAs to provide the necessary Optical Signal to Noise ratio. The PG1600P is ideally suited to transponder integration, because its advanced power transient suppression protects costly 40Gb/s receivers from the impact of transients generated at the end of a chain of EDFAs, without the use of expensive high speed variable attenuators. In addition, the incorporation of the Oasis control platform allows us to provide this functionality at very attractive price points to make the overall economics of the 40Gb/s system much more attractive.”
Avanex Senior Vice President of Sales, Scott Parker, added, “The PureGain 1600P is a key enabling technology in the 40Gb/s transponder application space that complements the PowerShaper™ Tunable Dispersion Compensator product line to create a broad range of highly cost-sensitive, smart, and flexible products that enable the system provider to manage their operational expenses while they upgrade their systems to 40Gb/s quickly. The technical strengths of the 1600 taken together with the Avanex PowerShaper 3300 TDC add up to a very attractive value proposition for our customers.”
