IEE, Inc., specializing in the design, test, support and fielding of human-systems interface (HSI) display technologies in a wide range of military/aerospace, industrial and retail applications, now offers a rugged, ARM-based 10.4" TFT XGA thin-client display that can be custom-tailored for harsh military environments.
With a full 10.4" XGA (1024 x 768) AMLCD, the rugged display features IEE's dual mode backlight system supporting variable reading modes from a high bright mode of 600 cd/m2 to NVIS lighting for dark environments.
The display's contrast ratio is optimized through the use of specialized surface treatments and optically clear bonding throughout the display stack-up. These exceptional readability parameters make the new display ideal for a wide range of military applications including soldier mount, vehicle mount and man-pack handheld use.
The backlit-enhanced display comes with a high-resolution five-wire resistive touchscreen, optically bonded to the LCD, or with a 16 pushbutton bezel – eight on each side – for extremely flexible function control. Both operator interfaces can be integrated into one unit as well, depending on the intended use of the display.
The ARM processor features both an I cache and D cache of 32 KB each, enabling simultaneous instruction and data fetching to improve the display's performance. A 128 KB L2 cache is also included. The processor's 512 MB internal memory of 16-bit wide DDR3-800 SDRAM speeds up data transfers and its 512 MB of 8-bit wide SLC NAND Flash increases write speeds.
The new display processor runs embedded Linux and supports many common software protocols, such as HTML 5.0 and Java VM; the integral Ethernet interface supports the VICTORY architecture implementation.
Up to six USB ports can be included to connect peripheral devices, such as a keyboard, a mouse or a memory stick, to the unit. The display optionally supports a host of standard video inputs, including composite RS-170/-343, analog VGA and digital DVI.
As an extension of IEE's MIL-STD qualified, web browser-based control display units (CDUs), the new display functions reliably both in harsh and in-the-field conditions. It is fully sealed for submersible applications, incorporates sealed circular I/O connectors and operates in temperatures from -46 degrees C to +70 degrees C.
The lightweight aluminum housing, measuring just 7.8" H x 11.6" W x 3.0" D, combines with a powerful ARM processor operating at 1 GHz, while drawing less than 10 W total with under 2 W on the processor itself. This enables IEE to deliver a SWaP-optimized unit that can incorporate the exact functionality needed for a particular display application.
