Institute of Microelectronics (IME) has entered into a MOU with MOSIS. Under this partnership, IME will offer MOSIS’ customers its multiple-project wafer (MPW) service. This unique collaboration targets at minimizing the cost limitations lying underway to promote extensive adoption of silicon photonics devices within the industry.
This partnership enables cost sharing for the fabrication, masks or the reticles, the setup and for implementing the design environment in MPW, thereby making the photonics integration technology more accessible. Photonics innovators can also benefit from IME’s device library that has integrated active and passive devices.
According to the Executive Director of IME, Prof. Dim-Lee Kwong, this recent collaboration will push the industry R&D forward as a result of significance and applicability of silicon photonics. The company anticipates offering the silicon photonics community its MPW capabilities that will contribute to further innovations and product development, thereby fostering the development of silicon photonics industry.
According to MOSIS Director, Mr Wes Hansford, optimization of efficiency and proficiency of a well-established semiconductor research institute (IME) and the company’s partnership with the same will promote resourceful and practical approaches in the silicon photonics environment that will help cater to the growing demands within the industry.
The company’s potential areas of collaboration include micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) MPW, 3D through-silicon vias (TSVs) and silicon interposers (TSI). These offerings can be accessed at IME by the end of this year and the first half of 2013.
