The IEEE Photonics Society’s 2012 International Group IV Photonics Conference is a single-track conference that will feature presentations focused on silicon photonics integration, applications and manufacturing technology; photonic devices and nanostructures; as well as advanced materials and fabrication technologies.
The conference format encourages one-on-one interaction between colleagues and will include both oral and poster sessions of contributed and invited papers, as well as a plenary session comprising reviews on a number of important developments in Group IV element technologies and processes. Additionally, a post-deadline session will feature up-to-date and exciting results.
Approximately 200 photonics professionals from industry, academia and government will gather for the 9th IEEE International Conference on Group IV Photonics (GFP-2012) at the Holiday Inn on the Bay in San Diego, California from August 29 – 31, 2012. Presentations will span a broad range of topics focused on silicon photonics and other Group IV element-based photonic materials and devices, including: photonic nanostructure Tx/Rx devices for advanced optical networks… the need for on-chip photonic integration for large data warehouse switches… GeSn light-emitting pin diodes on Si… advanced light manipulation with photonic crystal nanostructures… and other topics presented by experts in Group IV photonics.
“The IEEE International Conference on Group IV Photonics is one of the leading international conferences focused on silicon photonics materials, devices and processes,” said GFP-2012 General Co-Chair, Jurgen Michel of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MA, USA. “The conference represents a unique opportunity to for researchers, engineers and business leaders from around the world to gain new perspectives on the latest Group IV photonics developments.”
Plenary Speakers
The conference is scheduled to open with two plenary presentations by invited speakers, including Kinam Kim, Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, Korea, who will discuss the future photonics convergence made possible by complementary silicon CMOS technologies in high performance applications such as optical interconnects, lighting, displays and medical electronics. Also, Thomas Koch, University of Arizona, USA will share his thoughts on the status and future of SI Photonics.

Post-deadline Paper Session
Providing participants with the opportunity to learn about the latest significant developments in rapidly advancing areas of Group IV photonics, a post-deadline session will be held at 5:15pm on Friday, 31 August. A competition for the best post-deadline paper will be sponsored by the journal Nature Photonics, with the winning paper announced at the end of the session. Full details about post-deadline paper submission are available at: https://ieee-gfp.org/
Sunset Banquet Cruise on San Diego Bay
On Thursday evening, 30 August, registrants to the conference will also be treated to a sunset banquet cruise on San Diego Bay aboard The Lord Hornblower, a 150’ luxury yacht. A champagne reception, gourmet buffet dinner and delicious desserts will be served onboard the yacht, while guests enjoy waterside views of the San Diego skyline, US Navy surface and submarine fleet vessels, Cabrillo National Monument and the scenic Coronado Bridge.
The banquet speaker is Dr. Andrew Rickman of The Rockley Group, a UK-based international investment and fund management organization focused on developing technology businesses that contribute to global sustainability.
