Established since 1937, Ardmore Animal Hospital was one of the premier hospitals in the U.S. to achieve laser surgery on pets from The Main Line.
The hospital’s laser surgery without anesthesia promotes its objective of being dedicated to gentle and compassionate care as the surgery is performed to deliver reduced pain and improved recovery time.
Lasers employed for pet surgeries emanate a small, intense beam of light which is proficient to cauterize, incise and vaporize body tissues.
Through lasers, the surgeon can perform multiple surgeries with only regional or local anesthesia, thereby reducing the risk. Moreover, the pet is kept awake throughout the procedure. Combining the recent developments in drugs, the surgeons were able to block the pain in a specific area without using anesthesia.
Another advantage with lasers is its ability of precise cutting. The affected area is alone targeted and precisely cut, leaving behind the surrounding tissue undamaged. During incision, lasers can seal or cauterize blood vessels, reducing the loss of blood during the surgery or even in post surgical period. There is only minimal inflammation and swelling as lasers do not tear and damage body tissue. The laser’s ability to generate heat reduces infection, and as the nerve endings are sealed, the pain is also reduced.
Other veterinary applications of lasers include removal of small masses or tumors, declaw surgery, certain dental procedures, anal gland removal, surgeries with ear, eye and eyelid, and spay and neuter surgeries. Brachiocephalic condition (pushed in noses) in some breeds of dogs may be effectively treated by reducing the soft palate inside the nostrils, thereby improving their breathing capability.
