Thailand Floods Affect PPG’s Optical Product Operations

PPG Industries, a global provider of coatings and specialty products to industrial, construction, transportation and consumer product markets has declared a force majeure due to the severe floods in Thailand.

The Thailand floods have affected the company’s manufacturing and distribution operations for optical products. PPG produces certain optical products in Thailand and the force majeure has been declared for these products.

PPG has Solarlens facilities located in Lat Krabang and Bang Pa-In. The production has been suspended at these facilities. The operations at the company’s Transitions Optical facility at Chon Buri have not been suspended, but several customers are located in the flooded areas of Thailand, which has impacted the company’s operations.

The senior vice president of Optical and Specialty Materials at PPG, Richard C. Elias, stated that the flooding has severely affected the ability of the company to provide its products to its customers. Disruptions in the supply chain for optical products, as well as the direct flooding impact on its production facilities have led to this affect on customer supply, he added.

The company was monitoring the flood situation, but was not in a position to confirm the time within which it would resume its normal operations. PPG has many employees in the flood-affected regions. So far no injuries have been reported. The company was working carefully to ensure the well-being and the safety of its employees, Elias said.
