Texas Instruments has introduced two LED lighting drivers which are phase dimmable and can be used in architectural, commercial and residential purposes. The lighting drivers LM3448 and TPS92070 can also be used for down lights, spot lights, retrofit bulbs and LED ballasts.
While the LM3448 constant current LED driver has the 600V MOSFET integrated into it and has dimmable lighting of 2 to 8W the TPS 92070 has dimmable lighting of 6 to 20W. Both lighting LED drivers have the feature of LED open protection, a peak current limit for every cycle, thermal shutdown and lockout for under voltage.
The LM3448 includes a phase angle dimming decoder, TRIAC trailing-edge electronic dimmers and a high and low voltage Rdson MOSFET which reduces the complications in design. The driver can be used both as an insulated or non-insulated solution based on its topology which can be buck-boost, flyback or buck. The TPS92070 also has the TRIAC trailing edge electronic dimmers and is programmed for LED current regulation and valley switching. The driver can disable the external PFC function upon detecting the TRIAC. This increased the driver’s dimming performance. The AC/DC design of the driver also comes with an online navigation tool which can be used by customers to alter specifications such as dimming specifications, AC/DC voltage, isolation and the type of fixture. While the LM3448 is available in the 16-pin SOIC package, the TPS92070 is available with the 16-pin TSSOP package.
