Optimedica, a global ophthalmic company, has received CE mark to commercialize its Catalys precision laser system that is used for cataract eye surgeries in Europe.
The laser system integrates an optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging device, femtosecond laser, and OptiMedica’s advanced pattern scanning technology in a user-friendly, ergonomic system that provides superior accuracy to the cataract procedure. OptiMedica anticipates dispatching its first system in the final quarter of 2011 to Europe.
Cataract operation is a very common treatment administered globally, with approximately 19 million surgeries performed every year. Though cutting-edge surgical instruments and methods exist, many crucial moves need human intervention for this traditional medical procedure. Human interference restricts accuracy and standardization, substantially influencing complication rates and refractive outcomes.
The Catalys system is CE-mark approved for lens fragmentation, which means softening and segmenting the lens as a preparation for removal and for capsulotomy, which involves making a rounded incision in the lens capsule. CE mark approval for corneal incisions is expected in the near future. A clinical analysis has illustrated that Catalys provides significant advancements over manual surgical method on the basis of Capsulotomy shape, Capsulotomy size, Ease of lens fragmentation and disassembly, and Capsulotomy centration.
OptiMedica has designed the Catalys system in alliance with Medical Advisory Board of cataract specialists present globally. The system incorporates user-friendly and classic graphical user interface aimed at simplifying the formulating method and decreasing the time of the procedure.
