A manufacturer of fiber optic sensors, Opsens has announced that the fiber optic OPP-W sensor system will be used by an Alberta-based oil producer to instrument 21 wells in an SAGD oil sands project. This is the second major commercial order that Opsens’ has received.
The President of Opsens Solutions, Darren Wiltse stated that receiving the second order from the same client has been possible because the company focuses at strengthening its relationship with its customers by working closely with them and providing value-added services. President of Opsens, Pierre Carrier added that the orders received for sensor manufacturing, development and system deployment from oil and gas customers will reflect in the fiscal year’s strong revenue growth.
The installation of 21 wells will be managed and supervised by field services and engineering team at Opsens Solutions. The installation of the wells will commence immediately. Fifty percent of the installation is expected to be completed by August 2011.
The fiber optic OPP-W sensor system has been designed to provide reliable and accurate real-time downhole temperature and pressure data to the oil sands producers during its operation. SAGD operators will be able to improve oil/steam ratios and decrease lifting and operational costs by controlling the bottomhole pressure for artificial lift systems. In case of multiple well operations, the fiber optic sensor system by Opsens can help save millions of dollars by decreasing cost of water treatment, optimizing the consumption of natural gas consumption and improving the run time in lift systems.
