CoolLipo Laser System Receives FDA Clearance for Laser-Assisted Lipolysis

CoolTouch Inc., a pioneering manufacturer of medical lasers, announced today that the CoolLipo(TM) 1320 nm laser system received an additional 510(K) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for laser lipolysis or melting fat. The CoolLipo 1320 laser is designed to ablate fat in areas such as the neck, chin and arms and improves the outcome of conventional liposuction in larger areas such as the abdomen and thighs. In addition, the unique 1320 nm wavelength tightens the skin from the inside out by directly targeting collagen and connective tissue.

The CoolLipo procedure is performed in a physician's office under local anesthesia. Patient benefits include minimal, if any bruising, and less recovery time and cost than a face or neck lift.

"Patients find the procedure fits within their time schedule and their budget," states David R. Hennings, CoolTouch CEO. "This is an ideal procedure for those who aren't ready for a full face or neck lift, or have small fatty areas that don't respond to diet and exercise."

Douglas Key, MD, FACS from Key Laser Institute in Portland, Oregon has evaluated the safety and efficacy of laser lipolysis on the underchin & jowl of thirty patients. He found the 1320 wavelength in conjunction with conventional aspiration was twice as effective as aspiration alone.

"By choosing light that is more highly absorbed, we are finding more optimum results in terms of degree of skin tightening and greater comfort and recovery times for our patients," states Dr. Key.

Robert Weiss, MD, FACPh, Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at John Hopkins University School of Medicine, finds the 1320 wavelength provides an excellent skin tightening and fat contouring ability not seen with traditional liposuction alone.

"CoolLipo technology provides smoother results than with traditional lipoaspiration alone and makes these procedures significantly easier for both the patient and physician," states Dr. Weiss. "I have seen more of a skin tightening effect both when used adjunctively as well as principally."

A recently issued patent (#7,217,265) has been assigned exclusively to CoolTouch by inventors Dr. Mitchel P. Goldman, MD FACS from La Jolla SPA MD & Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology/Medicine, University of California, San Diego in California and David Hennings, CoolTouch CEO. This patent covers several of the key features of the CoolLipo procedure, including subdermal skin tightening.
