Dedicated to harnessing maximum sunlight to produce electricity, Solar 3D, a California-based three dimensional solar cell manufacturer has devised a low-cost semiconductor method to create solar cells in massive quantities.
Within the micro-photovoltaic (PV) solar cells, which trap sunlight, photons will jump around until they are changed into electrons. The breakthrough solar cell design is not only more efficient but is also cost-effective.
The CEO of Solar3D, Jim Nelson stated that by using current semiconductor production facilities, it was possible to achieve low-cost fabrication of unique 3D solar cells. Since existing machines can be put to use for developing the cells, it eliminates the need for constructing new manufacturing facilities or machines. Nelson also added that the machines will be devoid of operational bugs since the semiconductor manufacturing process was developed in the 90s and has been perfected over time with advancements in technology.
Comparing the PV solar cell to a diode, officials at Solar 3D are confident that three dimensional solar cells can be made in the existing manufacturing facilities for mass production.
