Magnolia Solar to Develop Nanostructured Optical Coatings for Solar Cell Applications

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has awarded a second product development contract to Magnolia Solar’s wholly-owned subsidiary. Magnolia specializes in developing thin film solar cells.

The product development program is to enhance thin film solar cells’ performance using sophisticated nanostructured optical coatings and light trapping methods.

The program will function for one year with funding contributions from Magnolia Solar. The company will partner with the Member of Magnolia Solar Technical Advisory Board, Prof. Fred Schubert and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) team, to include nanostructured-based coatings in efficient solar cell applications.

The program uses Magnolia Solar’s NYSERDA program operations. The Principal Investigator and Chief Technical Officer at Magnolia Solar, Dr. Roger E. Welser will lead the initiative to develop nanostructured coatings as part of the NYSERDA program. The nanostructured coatings horizontally scatter light into active layers of solar cells.
