Philips Lumileds has become the first mass producer of 150 mmwafers in the world and is currently manufacturing millions of gallium nitride-based LEDs every week on the larger substrates. The firm has sophisticated LED production facility and operational capability and its performance in illumination applications is the highest in terms of lm/W and lm/USD.
Every 150 mm wafer manufactures fourfold numbers of LEDs than that of present 3„c wafers. The shift to a large-sized wafer is widely considered as a significant path to meet the increasing demands for LEDs by the lighting market.
Philips Lumileds will increase its 150 mm production capacity to satisfy the needs for superior quality and more efficient LEDs from the consumer electronics, automotive and lighting industries. The firm will also continue the production of its current 3„c wafers.
A key factor in the implementation of LED technology is capacity extension. The potential to deploy extra epitaxial reactors with improved productivity and output clearly shows that the firm requires less capital. The expenditures can further go down when the production volume increases.
System operators, engineers and researchers at Philips Lumileds¡¦ San Jose and Singapore locations have deployed, tailored and enhanced devices to satisfy the firm¡¦s demanding manufacturing standards. They also assure that the company¡¦s products would meet the demands of lighting industry such as quality, output of light, efficiency and durability.
