3D Measurement Tools to Enhance Precision and Resolve Laser Triangulation Problems

Stemmer Imaging has introduced new 3D measurement tools to improve the precision of three-dimensional measurements in industrial applications. The products, CVB Metric 3D and CVB Merge 3D, have been developed to ensure precise calibration of 3D images and to get over issues in laser triangulation that arises from shadows in the laser line.

A 3D space can be calibrated by determining a defined calibration object using CVB METRIC 3D. Once the image is calibrated, the volume or data point area can be determined to subpixel accuracy. CVB Merge 3D is used to calibrate the combined resultant image in order to enhance accuracy.

CVB Merge 3D is used with multiple cameras to get over system deficiency in laser line triangulation. In addition, all defects and flaws would be detected during the course of inspection. Defects in laser line triangulation occur due to the shadows created by the surface structure of the object. Local height information cannot be extracted at the position of the shadows and therefore flaws cannot be detected. Using multiple cameras to gather images from the same laser line creates images with shadows in different positions. CVB Merge 3D merges all the images into a single height image that would only miss height information if there are shadows in all input images.
